248 Women Raped in Two Nights

A total of 248 women, claimed to have been raped by soldiers in the province of Sud-Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a region called the United Nations as the "rape capital" of the world, according to local media reports Monday.

A doctor of a hospital in Nakiele told AFP that 121 local women reported having been victims of rape on the night of 11 to 12 June. Meanwhile, a nurse said, the night before, 55 women reported being raped near the city of Abala. One other health workers say as many as 72 women in the village of Kanguli melalaporkan, they also raped that night.

Village Chief Nakiele, Losema Etamo Ngoma, told AFP, rape and looting carried out by at least 150 armed men under the command of the national army colonel Nyiragire Kulimushi, also known as "Kifaru". According to him, the soldiers were arriving in groups from 11:00 am local time on June 11, instructed by Kulimushi to find something to eat.

"At about 20.00 I heard the cries of women everywhere. I asked to see the colonel, but an officer told me that I could not see him, then I returned home," he said. "They left the village in the morning at around 5:00. I went to the houses around and I found the women were crying," he said.

"The soldiers have raped us," said the head of the village was imitating the women's confessions to him. A 28-year-old mother who has two children told AFP how two soldiers forced him to open the door before threatening to kill her, then raped her. "After they left, I started to feel sick," said the mother.

Kulimushi is a former member of the Mai Mai tribal militias that blend with the national army in 2009 after a peace deal with Kinshasa.

After the brutal action, the government spokesman, Lambert Mende, said government forces are now actively seeking Kulimushi and that special courts be set up to examine the case.

United Nations (UN), groups of human rights, and foreign governments have long complained about impunity for heinous crimes that occurred that made the army in Congo. Margot Wallstrom, the UN special representative for combating sexual violence in conflict wilayak, some time ago, called, Democratic Republic of Congo as the "rape capital" of the world.
